After great anticipation, construction on the Jewish Home’s new east wing began on September 1, 2004.

Made possible with funds raised by our "Fulfilling Our Promise" comprehensive campaign, the new facility will house state-of-the-art medical clinics, a geriatric research center, and a new modern kosher kitchen. The upgrading and renovation of our existing facilities will provide new centers for wellness and fitness and creative arts, a new synagogue and spiritual space, and a coffee bistro and gift boutique for residents.

Project Update 4/23/07

By the time you read this update, the walls that have been keeping our project under wraps will be gone. In fact, as I write this, I’m sure many of you have already noticed that some of the construction walls were removed from the B-building hallways and this area is now protected by sheets of plastic.

In the café the cabinets are in place and the equipment is being installed. If you use your imagination you can smell the coffee brewing. Can the pastries be far behind?

On a more serious note, the inspectors were at the Home on Friday, April 27. They gave the project a thorough inspection and issued the Jewish Home a stocking permit. This permit will allow us to set up the areas, stock the shelves, and give the space a final cleaning before we open it to our Jewish Home community. Our fitness center is also nearing completion. The exercise equipment has arrived and is ready to be put into place. This means no more excuses for skipping that workout since the center will be available to all residents and staff.

The grounds, too, are being brightened with plantings and a good general clean-up. Construction fences are coming down, and Turner Construction has begun the process of packing up for their departure.

All these changes indicate that the inconveniences of having construction on-site will soon produce the rewards of beautiful and exciting new and renovated spaces that everyone at the Jewish Home of San Francisco can enjoy.

Construction Chronicles
Update 3/23/07

Phase 2 of our construction/renovation project, which includes the new public areas, continues to come together, and is scheduled to be substantially completed by March 30, pending OSHPD (Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development) inspections.

We can anticipate additional inspections by OSHPD, the Department of Health, the San Francisco Fire Department and State Fire Marshall. But as we watch, the space is definitely coming alive; the dust is settling and temporary walls are coming down.

  • Colors for the garden café have been selected and the sleek tile floor in the A-building lobby has been laid.
  • B-building residents and staff will have noticed that new doors are being installed, connecting this building to the new space. Several more new doors are being installed in the galleria hallway, as well as in other locations. These doors are installed according to the City of San Francisco’s fire codes, and will secure an even safer environment for our residents and staff.
  • The up-lighting for the stained glass structure (made up of the beautiful windows from our old synagogue) is being installed.
  • Exterior landscaping is in progress, with new plantings on both the island in front of the A-building’s entrance, as well as in the main parking lots.
  • Plans are being developed to relocate the gift shop and the garden café into their new space. We are also in the process of moving the clinics into the Rosenberg Family Center.

As time draws near for the grand opening, we begin to see more smiles on the faces of residents and staff. No doubt everyone has visions of enjoying our new garden café, making a purchase in the new gift shop, or using the new wellness center. Whatever we look forward to, it is gratifying to watch the spaces transform from work sites filled with contractors to thriving areas which residents, visitors, volunteers and staff alike will fill with laughter, good conversation, services, and activities.

Construction Chronicles
Update 2/22/07

We are entering the final stages of phase 2 of the construction project, which includes our new synagogue, an exercise room, renovated garden café and gift shop, and a new main corridor. This new corridor will allow residents and staff to move between the lobby of the A-building, the B-building, and the new Rosenberg Family Center.

  • Over the Presidents’ Day holiday, work continued in the A-building lobby with the removal of the old floor tile. Installation of the new floor tile design began on February 20 and will continue through the next week.
  • Turner Construction Company has been working on the interior of the site, completing the wall-framing, electrical wiring, and HVAC mechanical systems rough-ins. Once OSHPD (Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development) has inspected and certified the work, Turner Construction will be able to start enclosing the space with drywall. The drywall will add character and dimensions to the project, allowing us to see the beauty of this new area. Finishing touches will begin after the drywall installation is completed. New colors have been selected for the walls and new ceiling tiles will be put into place. Thereafter, carpeting and the new VCT tile floor pattern will serve to unify the buildings.
  • The excitement of the project continues with the new synagogue. The new wavy ceiling is being put in place and the new millwork will be arriving soon. These two features are critical to the overall look of the new space. We will all be able the view the progress as the temporary walls are taken down and the areas begin to open, displaying the new colors and designs.

I know we are all looking forward to sharing coffee, pastries, and good conversation in our new café, exercising in our new fitness room, and attending services in the new synagogue. As we anticipate the final days of work on this project, I will continue to provide updates on the progress of this exciting and wonderful addition to the Home.

update: September 1, 2004

I am very pleased to announce that, after great anticipation, construction on our new east wing begins September 1, 2004. For your information, below are highlights of construction activities that will occur over the next couple of weeks.

  • Shoring will be placed next to the retaining wall adjacent to the Boutique/Garden Café. This portion of the project will be completed by the middle of next week.
